PROJECT DETAILS:
I-80 is an important east/west link to the economic vitality of California.
Stretching 2,900 miles from Teaneck, New Jersey to San Francisco, California. I-80 is designated as an Interstate for three reasons: to directly connect principal metropolitan areas, cities and industrial centers; to serve the national defense; and to provide convenient east/west connection for routes extended north/south between Canada and Mexico.
The Sierra Nevada portions of I-80 have been diligently maintained by Caltrans for more than five decades. Because of the severe weather conditions that Sierra winters create along I-80, the roadways have become severely worn and are in need of repair.
To help repair and improve the condition of I-80, these ongoing construction efforts will provide the following corrective actions:
- Remove and replace worn Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) with new PCC and/or asphalt concrete on the mainline, shoulders, chain-on/chain-off areas and ramps
- Rehabilitate ramps and widen shoulders
- Replace various structures
- Apply polyester concrete overlays, bridge deck overlays and replace approach slabs at various bridge structures
- Rehabilitate drainage structures (i.e. culvert replacement and culvert lining)
- Replace metal beam guardrail
- Replace existing median barriers
- Construction of permanent detention and/or infiltration basins
